Which Battery Generation Is Right for Your System?

3rd Generation (IQ 5P): The newest and most capable Enphase battery. The IQ 5P delivers 5 kWh of capacity and 3.84 kW of continuous power per unit. It requires the IQ System Controller 3 or 3G and pairs exclusively with IQ8 microinverters. If you’re building a new system or upgrading from M Series microinverters with a controller swap, the 5P is the recommended choice. Up to 4 units can be stacked for 20 kWh total capacity.

2nd Generation (IQ 3/3T and IQ 10/10T): These batteries work with IQ6, IQ7, and IQ8 microinverters through the IQ System Controller 2. They’re a solid option for retrofitting existing Enphase systems that already use 2nd-generation infrastructure. The IQ 10T provides 10.08 kWh of capacity — ideal for larger energy needs. If you have an existing IQ System Controller 2 and IQ Combiner, you can add these batteries without upgrading your controller.

4th Generation (IQ 10C/10CS): The latest large-format battery from Enphase. 10.08 kWh capacity with improved power electronics. Requires IQ8 microinverters and the IQ Combiner 6C. Third-party inverter compatibility was expected by end of 2025 — check with Enphase for the latest update on cross-brand support.

Common System Configurations

New Build with Full Enphase Ecosystem: IQ8 microinverters + IQ Battery 5P (1–4 units) + IQ System Controller 3/3G. This is the most straightforward path — all components are current generation, fully compatible, and managed through the Enphase App.

Retrofit with Existing IQ7 Microinverters: Add IQ Battery 3T or 10T with the IQ System Controller 2 and IQ Combiner 5/5C (with COMMS-KIT-01). This avoids the cost of upgrading to 3rd-generation controllers while still adding storage.

Upgrade from M Series Microinverters: To use the IQ Battery 5P, you’ll need to upgrade to IQ8 microinverters AND install the IQ System Controller 3/3G with the COMMS-KIT-02 and Envoy S Metered. This is a more involved retrofit but provides access to the newest battery technology.

AC-Coupled with Third-Party Inverter: Tesla, FranklinWH, and other AC-coupled inverters can work alongside Enphase batteries, but expect to manage two separate apps with limited cross-platform functionality. For the cleanest experience, use Enphase microinverters with Enphase batteries.

Commissioning and Warranty Notes

• The IQ Battery 5P requires Enphase University certification for commissioning. Make sure your installer credentials are current before scheduling the install.
• For full warranty coverage, purchase from an Authorized Enphase Distributor like Sun Supply PV. Gray-market units may not qualify for warranty support.
• Use COMMS-KIT-01 (not 02) when pairing IQ Combiner 5/5C with 2nd-generation batteries.
